Happy International Earth Day! Celebrated on the 22 April each year, this annual event is dedicated to raising awareness about the various environmental challenges that face our planet.

International Earth Day 2021

The theme for 2021 is Restore Our Earth which focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. In this way, the theme rejects the notion that mitigation or adaptation are the only ways to address climate change. It is up to each and every one of us to Restore Our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it. We all need a healthy Earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health & survival, and happiness. A healthy planet is not an option — it is a necessity.

More than 1 billion people in 192 countries now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

We hear it so often, “if we all do something small, it can equate to something big.” Here are some of the small ways in which we can all contribute:

1. Use a reusable water bottle to make a big impact on your plastic consumption.
2. Avoid single-use plastic items, and if possible buy products in glass or paper. Glass products are easily reused and paper is a much friendlier product to the environment.
3. Practice sustainable fashion. Donate your old clothes and home goods instead of throwing them out. When you need something, consider buying used items. Used does not always mean unfashionable.
4. Always read labels. Use environmentally-friendly, non-toxic cleaning products to avoid washing toxic chemicals down the drain.
5. Integrate a simple act of green into your daily routine. Take a shorter shower and use a water-saving shower head.
6. Save electricity and turn off lights when you leave the room.
7. Buy local food to reduce the distance from farm to fork. Buy straight from the farm, frequent your local farmers’ market, or join a local food co-op.
8. Reduce your meat consumption to curb carbon emissions from the livestock industry.
9. Try growing your own organic garden.

Most of these tips are not foreign to us, but we take it for granted how often we forget to do some of these simple tasks that take minimal effort. International Earth Day is a great reminder that we all need to do our part to help preserve our planet.
